Nowgaon Mission School: A Glorious 175 Years
An institution has the privilege of educating generations of students, having started a century before India gained Independence
Nowgaon Mission High School is celebrating 175 years of its existence and a grand welcome was accorded to participants on the inaugural day of the celebrations. Students holding aloft poles with white emblazoned flags lined the red carpet welcome route to the pandal. It is the oldest school in Assam, set up by Miles Bronson in 1846. The school retains the old spelling of Nagaon and the age-old traditions in a school which has moulded the lives of thousands of past pupils and continues to do so at present. The theme and logo of the Dodransbicentennial Jubilee celebrations of the school were inaugurated in 2021. The contributions of the school to education in Assam have been tremendous as it went about not just schooling children but also creating patriots.
The school and its proud heritage now speaks of not just one generation of students but many, a process that started a century before India attained Independence, as Assam went through its troubles and tribulations, the good and the bad. The institution in so many ways represents a heritage that Assam calls its own.
