Silchar, March 24: One thing that arises in your mind is that the Sylheti-dominated 139-yea-old city called the second largest city of Assam always focuses on some unnecessary issues like the Citizenship Amendment Act, NRC, etc. If you move round this city from Ranghirkhari to National Highway, to Silchar Medical College, no doubt visitors will ask why the second largest city of Assam is one of the dirtiest cities of Assam.Silchar gave India many strong politicians Mainul Haque Choudhury, Rashida Haque Choudhury,  Nurul Huda, Santosh Mohan Deb , Kabindra Purkayastha and Sushmita Deb. 

Silchar Assembly elections

This year Assembly Election in Silchar seat will be held on  April 1.  Many believe that this time there will be a three-way contest in the state. The ruling party BJP candidate Dipayan Chakraborty is famous for his social background, Congress candidate Tamal Kanti Banik is also famous for his cultural background and Independent candidate former BJP MLA of Silchar Dilip Kumar Paul. Failing to get a BJP ticket, Paul decided to fight as an Independent candidate from Silchar.

However this city is also beset upon by a host of problems, civic and otherwise.

Traffic problems

One of the major problems of a Silcharian, faced every day during office hours.

Waterlogging:  People of this city struggle to cope with waterlogged residences and lanes.The waterlogging menace has been magnified in the absence of a modern and proper drainage network.

Medical Treatment : Due to the absence of a cardiologist at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, many patients, over a long time, have had to suffer. Some of them even had to face death due to the lack of proper treatment.

Public transport: Citizens have to depend on auto-rickshaws. There are no city buses and other means of public transport.
