‘Institutions of higher education must act as a catalyst for research and development’

Governor Prof. Mukhi addresses second convocation of Assam Royal Global University

Guwahati, Nov 11: “Our students have great imaginations and infinite innovative potential. Universities must harness this potential and work as a catalyst for the promotion of  research and development.” said Assam governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi while speaking at the second convocation of Assam Royal Global University today in the presence of the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, a press release from Raj Bhawan said.

Prof Mukhi who is the visitor of the university said that ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi  took charge of the country, there has been tremendous development in different sectors especially in science and technology. He appealed to the teaching and student community to familiarize themselves with new age technology and contribute to the growth of our country using these technologies. Assam Global University should take a proactive role in helping its students in mastering these cutting edge technologies. The university should also help its students to equip and enable them to appreciate and address the problems faced by fellow citizens in rural and urban India.

The Governor also said, “Education is fundamental for achieving full human potential, developing an equitable and just society and promoting national development. Providing universal access to quality education is the key to India’s continued ascent and leadership on the global stage in terms of economic growth, social justice and equality. Universal high-quality education is the best way forward for developing and maximizing our country’s rich talents and resources for the good of the individual, the society, the country, and the world. You all will be glad to know that India will have the highest population of young people in the world over the next decade. Therefore, our ability to provide high-quality educational opportunities to our young minds will determine the future of our country.”

Speaking on the national perspective of education, the Governor said that Nation is a form of collective sentiments of a large mass of people which should adequately be working to strengthen the spirit of ‘Nation first’. He appealed to the students to imbibe the spirit of “Nation first, self last”. He also urged upon the teachers to inculcate the spirit of nationalism among the students.

Talking about the new National Education Policy, the Governor said that it is the first  education policy of the 21st century which is a result of high end comprehensive research. It aims at re-engineering the educational ecosystem of the country. The main thrust of this policy is to end the fragmentation of higher education by transforming higher education institutions into large multidisciplinary universities and knowledge hubs.

The Governor also said that he was happy that the Policy has created opportunities for holistic, flexible and innovative curricula for higher educational institutions to include credit-based courses which will be helpful in promoting skills of the students. The new policy primarily focuses on producing quality human resources with a modern outlook and firm faith in Indian culture and tradition. He also hoped Assam Royal Global University which is working to implement NEP 2020 would take into consideration all the salient points and make itself a model university in terms of NEP 2022 implementation.

The Governor congratulated the students and advised them to continue on the path of knowledge and contribute selflessly to the progress of the nation as a whole.  He also urged them to extend a helping hand to others who are less privileged.

It may be noted that the convocation conferred degrees and diplomas to a total number of 951 students, 30 Gold medalists and 36 silver medalist.  Noted journalist and social activist Patricia Mukhim, Principal Scientific Adviser, Govt.of India Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, and Chancellor  of Lovely Professional University Dr. Ashok Mittal were conferred on D.Lit. Degrees.

 Education Minister Dr.Ranoj Pegu, Chancellor, Assam Royal Global University Dr AK Pansari, Vice-Chancellor Prof SP Singh, Chief Advisor Prof MKChaudhuri, of Gyan Sagar Foundation, members of the Governing Body, Board of Management and the Academic Council of the University, faculty members, students and other dignitaries were present at the convocation.
